Crafting with FedEx Out of Office Blog

Posted on 31 May 2010 by MommyKnows

Georgia and I just spent a lazy morning crafting bookmarks for Father’s Day. They were inspired by the FedEx Out of Office blog. From gift and craft ideas to spring cleaning and party planning tips, the blog provides innovative projects that anyone can tackle. With Father’s Day and the summer right around the corner, Out of Office features tips on how to turn photos and children’s artwork into great presents and fun craft projects kids can create on their own. The blog also has weekly round-ups of some of the best project ideas from around the Web.

The men in our family are all readers, so Georgia is making her Daddy and Poppa bookmarks for Father’s Day. FedEx Office Out of Office blog has a quick and easy project idea – personalized bookmarks! This is a great craft project for kids to make and can be made with anything and everything from old photos or wrapping paper, to magazine clippings or scrapbook paper remnants.

FedEx Out of Office Blog

We used the following to get started:

• 4 templates
• Ribbon
• Stickers
• Crayons

Start by cutting out your bookmark template. Next, gather craft supplies and get to crafting! For inspiration, check out the cute bookmarks shown as examples on Out of Office: http://outofoffice.fedex.mediacdt.com

FedEx Out of Office Blog

There are tons of other great crafts with templates at the FedEx Out of Office blog. I know Sam will enjoy making the Kites (me too!).

Felt Play Mat Tutorial (sort of)

Posted on 09 April 2010 by MommyKnows

Georgia loves wee plastic animals. She’s an animal nut in general. The Easter Bunny brought her a tube of plastic farm animals (the rabbits getting cheaper and cheaper) and with it was a small plastic play mat. She loved it and call it her map. Unfortunately, it lasted about 2 days.

It got me thinking about creating a longer lasting version from felt. I searched the internet high and low looking for some ideas, but there is very little out there. I decided to make it up :)

_KIM5877 copy

I started with a very large piece of green felt. I bought this green felt for a girl guide craft (15 years ago) that never came to fruition. I just knew it would eventually come in handy.

Next Georgia and I chatted about what she might like on the ‘map’. She wanted a farm and a jungle, and I had visions of mountains and a lake. I suggested some highways, she wanted dirt roads.

Felt Play Mat Tutorial

I drew a rough version on brown paper and then drew some rough paper templates. As you can see you don’t need to get fancy!

I cut out all of the shapes in felt. I have a bunch 8.5×11 sheets of felt from Michaels and the Dollar store around to use for most of the shapes, but not the right colours for my mountains. I was determined that this ‘map’ wouldn’t cost anything, so I used some felted sweaters that I had left over from a previous craft project for the mountains.

The mountains were created using large blocks of colour. I cut out the various pieces and then pinned and sewed them together using a LARGE ziz-zag stitch.

making mountains

I wanted the barn to be a uniform shape, but didn’t have a pattern. I drew a 1/2 barn and then folded over a piece of fabric and cut on the fold. Tada … a symetrical shape.

Green triangles make great spruce trees.

Felt Play Mat Tutorial

I wanted the roads and rivers to be a uniform width, but I didn’t want them to be just straight lines. I taped two sharpies to either side of a cordless screwdriver and then drew out strips of road and river on brown and blue fabric. A girls gotta do, what a girls gotta do.

making roads

Once all of the shapes were cut out, we played around with placement for awhile, once satisfied I started sewing pieces together starting with the rivers, then the roads.

Felt Play Mat Tutorial

Georgia especially loves to play farm, I wanted the scenery to be somewhat similar to our Alberta landscape, and if you’ve ever flown over the Alberta prairie it’s like flying over a patchwork quilt in browns and greens and golds. I used several pieces of scrap felt and one flowered fabric to try and replicate that behind the farm.

Once all the features were sewed together I started sewing them down on the large green backing. I started with the rivers again, then the roads and lakes and then the finishing shapes. I sewed the mountains on last. Most the the features were sewn with the machine using a zigzag stitch but some of the shapes (trees and barn) are beyond my sewing ability and I used liquid stitch and then sewed them on by hand.

_KIM5873 copy

I decided to put a backing and because I had so much green felt left over I decided to use that. At this point I realised that neither of the pieces (front or back) was square. The edges weren’t lining up very well … (CRAP)! I decided that rather than trying to make a perfectly square lines, I’d just sew the two sides together free hand and then trim the edges with pinking shears.

It worked.

Georgia loves the finished ‘map’.

10 Tutorials I am Dying to Try

Posted on 07 April 2009 by MommyKnows

This post has been inspired by ProBlogger and Flexible Dreams. ProBlogger, has inspired me to write a list post. Flexible Dreams inspired the content.

Makin' Bacon

10 Tutorials I am Dying to Try (… just, please don’t let me die trying).

  • 1. I’m a wee bit worried I don’t have the sewing skills for this one, but I know Georgia would *love* a twirly skirt made using this tutorial @ house on hill road.
  • 2. I’d love to attempt a sundress for Georgia from Mr. MK’s old shirt using either this tutorial or even this one.
  • 3. I want and need to master these Top 10 Killer Photoshop Combo Moves.
  • 4. I am going to protect and backup my blog by installing and utilize a wordpress plugin using idiot-proof instructions from Heather (a wordpress wonder). OK … I am not really dying to try this … in fact the thought of it makes me want to HURL, but I’d be crazy not to!
  • 5. I’m not sure why (we don’t need them), but I want to sew a wool diaper cover from an old sweater using this tutorial here.
  • 6. Oh, the things I could create if I used this ‘create elastic shirring’ technique.
  • 7. I’m definitely going to create my own wordpress theme using this tutorial. This one just might do me in.
  • 8. These super cute Easter themed cake pops by Bakerella need to be made before the weekend. Photos to follow soon!
  • 9. I know Georgia would adore adding these deliciously cute felt doughnuts to her stash. They look so easy, I like easy.
  • 10. Last but not least, I NEED to make a rag rug using this great tutorial at This Vintage Chica.
  • Are there tutorials out there you love, want to try, need to share? I want to know, so make your own list and reference it in the comments OR comment below and leave me links to the ‘how-to’ goodness. Thanks :)

    Stark Raving Mad

Posted on 31 March 2009 by MommyKnows

I am totally losing it! ME! The one who said, “crafts schmafts“.

    underwear from old t-shirt
I made these panties for Georgia out of Sam’s old t-hirt.

For some reason this made Sam, scream and blush. The boy is just too easy to embarrass. I guess the thought of his old t-shirt wrapped around his sister’s hiney was just too much to take. MEN!

I’d show you how I made them (next time), but Martha is on in 5 minutes. Gotta run! (oh the shame … I need flogged!)

I hope my old drinking buddies don’t read this!

    The Finished Product

Posted on 09 February 2009 by MommyKnows

After all my whining and complaining about sewing, I thought I’d share with you the results.

    Ta-da!

    sewing 1
Ignore the model, in her world camera = scowl! I made the skirt from a thrift-shop lambswool sweater that I felted. I used the same felted wool to applique the puppy on to an inexpensive white tee from Old Navy.

I didn’t use a pattern, but I did loosely follow the instructions for this skirt here: Oliver + S lazy daze skirt. I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. As long as you don’t take a close look at the seams, it is quite presentable.

    _KIM7989 copy
Here is one where she is actually smiling. Surprisingly enough, she actually quite liked the outfit. She was a wee bit miffed that I sewed the dog onto her shirt. I think she thought she was getting a stuffy. OOPS!

Any other ideas for the recycled wool? I’d love any links, tips and/or ideas.

Sew-and-Run or Sewicide / Happy Book Day to You ~ the Series Winner too!

    12/365 - hope 5 - vintage buttons
Photography 12/365 / OWP Hope 5/28 – Vintage buttons from my grandma’s stash. I like the colors.

(Hope may have been the wrong word for me! I’m not quite that sappy on a daily basis. What this image has to do with hope, has me stumped. Ummm … I hope someone besides me cleans these up?)

I am upcycling wool sweaters again, which translates to –> the kitchen is a freaking disaster zone!

I know I said, “crafts schmafts” (and I meant it when I said it), but I somehow find my way from one craft site to another, they are creating great things, and I just can’t help myself. I MUST sew! Mmm … Esty, I love it!

Sadly, I’ve nothing to show you except the button mess above. I don’t think I am one of those people who can take you photo-step by photo-step through a craft project, while actually completing the project. Every brain cell available is focused on the project (to hell with the children!). The sewing machine operation has me totally out of my element. I couldn’t possibly operate it and use a camera (or parent) at the same time. I don’t even breathe while I sew. SERIOUSLY. I hold my breath and pray with each seam. It is terrifying.

I’ve discovered, using a sewing machine seriously stresses me out. My heart pounds, I sweat, it feels like my first driving lesson. Thank GOD there are no other ‘sewers’ on the road, because I would have zigzagged them to death. It would most likely be classified as a ‘sew and run’, because I stop for nothing but ginormous swigs of ice water (I’m sweating remember!). It’s sewicide for my nerves. Yet, I shall persevere.

I’ll quit yakking about my terrify afternoon of crafting and get to the really important stuff, like the winner of this week’s ‘Happy Book Day to You ~ the Series‘ giveaway.

    The winner is:

Debbie of Suburb Sanity – email me please @ kim (at) mommyknows (dot) com and let me know your address and which book you’d like.

I want to know about your most recent creative project? Feel free to leave a link to photos or instructions in the comments. If you hate crafts, you can tell me all about that too!

    Lizzy loves Chocolate …

Posted on 29 November 2008 by MommyKnows

Lizzy loves chocolate, well any sweets really. She also likes crafts.

This morning we made some chocolate lollipops from a Wilton kit.

    My creation
Lizzy loved it — Can’t you tell.

Thanks for all your kind comments and emails. I am actually feeling much better. The doctor actually made me go into the hospital to see him. I have to report ALL symptoms to a study nurse as part of my drug trial. However, by the time the doctor got back to me, I was feeling nearly 100%, I felt like I was wasting his time and mine. Oh well. All’s well that ends well.

All comments and back-links for this post will be entered to win one of two Power Ranger action figures (includes shipping and handling) in my ‘Power Ranger Giveaway’. If you comment and blog about the Giveaway you’ll receive two entries (too easy). I’ll randomly choose two winners on December 1st, 2008 @ 9 p.m. –> make sure to come by and enter often.

Oops! I’m stumped. 911 I need help! (coffee contest continues)

Posted on 20 October 2008 by MommyKnows

Winner is: Anastasia –> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com.

I forgot to pick the ‘have a coffee on me’ winners for the last few posts.

I’ve done that now –> so make sure to go back and check if you are a WINNER.

    stuffie without a body
I’m making a ‘softie’ (my kids call them stuffies) from my recycled (or is that upcycled?) wool sweaters. I’m sort of stumped. I can’t decide how to make the body (I’m just making it up as I go along) AND whether make it in the same wool/cashmere as the head and limbs or use a different color, so it looks sort of like clothing. I might have to go searching for more sweaters, all of the colors I have just don’t look quite right. I pretty much have to stick with felt as it doesn’t fray and I don’t have a machine. Any ideas –> links please.

    making a stuffie
The BIG red nose … hmmm … might change that too.

I’ve also decided that I need a sewing machine. That will mean that I will also need lessons. Sewing everything by hand is a bit much. My stitches are not neat enough and it looks kind of tacky.

OMGAWD I’m a tacky crafter. Someone rescue me!

Be back when he/she is finished.

All comments and back-links for this post will be entered to win a $10 Starbucks Gift Card (includes shipping and handling) in my ‘Have a Coffee on Me’ Contest. If you comment and blog about the contest you’ll receive two entries (too easy). I have a whole ‘schwack’ of Gift Cards to give away, so make sure and come back often for a chance to ‘have a coffee on me’.

    Felt Mitts (coffee contest continues)

    Felt Mitts (coffee contest continues)

Posted on 16 October 2008 by MommyKnows

**Winner is: Emily B – please email me Emily @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com to claim your prize.**

Monday the whole family (plus the dog), my aunt and uncle, cousin, wife and 2 mini cousins packed up and headed to a local pumpkin patch. The kids had a great time, BUT it was COLD. It feels like winter here.

    Georgia
Already dry chapped winter skin is making an appearance. My hands hurt with cold all afternoon. It got me thinking about felt (remember I found felt last spring), and how even though I am the NON-crafty sort, the one who said, “craft schmafts“, I was desperate to turn old Salvation Army wool sweaters into mitts and slippers for the kids.

Did you know you can ‘felt’ old wool sweaters by washing in hot water and rinsing in cold? Make sure you add soap :)
    Felted Sweaters
Here are a few of the sweaters that I felted. I think this batch went through 2 cycles in the machine. These started out as adult larges and are now about a kids size 4 (I know because they fit Georgia).

    Felt from Felted Sweaters
Once felted, I cut the sweaters up into usable pieces. Mostly this means cutting out the seams.

    Mitten templates
I decided to make Sam a pair first. Mostly because he was the only one who DIDN’T care about color, design etc. It was nice to be able to do whatever I wanted. He wasn’t bothered in the the least to get the dark gray lambs wool. I traced his hand, added a 5 mm – 1 cm seam allowance and then cut out two templates.

Pin template to felted wool and cut out
I pinned the paper templates to the fabric and then cut out the fabric. I did two layers at a time … mostly because I am lazy like that. Also note, that you can use the ribbing of the sweater waistband as the wrist area for the mittens if you cut them as above.

    One finished mitten (inside out)
I then turned them inside out and sewed them together. I sewed these by hand, because I don’t own a sewing machine, and have no clue how. No worries though … hand stitching works just fine.

    One finished mitten.
Woohoo –> one down and one to go.

Once the two mitts were sewn, I used other recycled felt pieces, buttons etc. to add a cute design. I think these turned out sufficiently boyish.

    Recycled Wool Sweater Mittens

I am working on some Chihuahua mittens for Georgia (her newest obsession). Lizzy has now decided she wants ‘girl’ Skulls. Then I am going to get started on some felt booties.

Do you have any projects on the go?
