We’re in St. George, Utah tonight. As always, we’re several hours behind schedule. This time it’s because, I stopped to shop at outlet malls NOT tire troubles. The kids seemed to enjoy a lazy day on the road. They spent most all of the time watching movies and playing DS.

Somewhere in NV ...
I took this photo of Lizzy about an hour ago. She was watching the Parent Trap (so was Sam). It struck me how different travel is now. For starters everyone is buckled into a comfy seat. Separate sound systems allow movies for the kids and music for Mr. MK and I. The only music we had as kids was our own singing and the only time we were buckled up was after a game of ‘punch-buggy’ got out of hand and ended up in a fist fight, then we’d be buckled in our own side of the backseat to keep us apart … NOT safe. Ah, the good ole days.

Did you take many family road trips as a kid?

I’ll be doing my NaBloPoMo thingy all during the holiday. I’ll also be twittering the road trip away –> follow me on twitter @ http://twitter.com/mommyknows.

We spent Wednesday at Universal Studios and Thursday at Legoland. Georgia did quite well at both, she even squealed with delight at Universal, when one of the dogs in the Animal show was an ‘animal actor’ from Beverly Hills Chihuahua (remember she only loves small dogs). After a two day break, we thought we’d give her one more try at getting excited about Disneyland …

She's just not that into you ...
Conversation earlier today –>

Me: Georgia, do you like Disneyland?
Georgia: Yes, when I am at home, I like it.
I guess she just wants to ‘like it’ from afar –> She’s just not that into you Mickey.

Me and My Promises (coffee contest continues — WINNERS announced)

Nearly as popular as Disneyland, is the hotel pool. I promised the kids, that no matter what they’d swim everyday. I’ve found myself poolside the last few nights, in the dark, shivering; while Sam and Lizzy dive for quarters.

Nearly as popular as Disneyland ...Again taken with my iPhone –> I am taking ‘real’ photos but I am just too tired to upload/edit etc. With my iPhone I can just email them to flickr and they’re ready to blog.

Winners have been randomly choosen for all past coffee contest posts. Make sure to go back and check if you are a winner!

Twilight Zone ‘Toddler’ of Terror (coffee contest continues)

This is our hotel …

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Taken with my iPhone.

Just kidding! We’re at a nice suite hotel with complimentary breakfast and supper –> Bonus! However, travelling with Georgia to theme park after theme park is sort of like the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror –> a series of terrifying and unexplicable ups and downs, that send you realing into the dark recesses of parenting toddlers. If anyone ever hears me utter Disney and Georgia in the same sentence again, HIT ME hard.

Because You Asked. (coffee contest continues)

I had several emails and a couple of comments asking about Sammy and Georgia’s Halloween costumes. I know, I know, Halloween is old news. That’s what I am all about, OLD NEWS, just don’t tell anybody.

sam as ash ketchum
Sam is NUTS, CRAZY, STARK RAVING MAD, about Pokemon. He choose to be Ash Ketchum –> Pokemon trainer. I didn’t argue, it was EASY. Just a little bit of felt and a few articles of clothing he already had and –> wahlah –>Ash was created. We bought the Poke-ball in late Sept., each and everyday until Halloween he asked if he could play with it. I said, “NO”. Good thing too, by 6 pm on Halloween, it was MIA.

Georgia wasn’t home for Halloween. She was on the farm with Grandma and Poppa. My mom bought her a ‘pink poodle’ costume, because she loves small dogs (not rabbits –> contest still open). As it turned out the costume didn’t quite fit her the way she wanted, so she opted out of dressing up and trick-or-treating. Apparently, she likes small dogs, NOT small dog costumes. She was the candy hander-outer to the 6 kids and one dad that came to the door. She’s still talking about the beautiful princess and her scary dad. She apparently had the time of her life. I can’t decide if she is hard to please, or easy to please?!

Oh What a Day! (coffee contest continues)

Winner is: Tenille —> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com.

Today was a HUGE day for me. I started a ‘clinical drug trial’ to treat my MS. For the next 3 years I will give myself 8 injections a week (7 subcutaneous and 1 intramuscular). I spent the day at the hospital learning how to give myself the injections, parting with about 1/2 cup of blood for another ‘clinical trial’ involving genetics and doing all kinds of tests to measure the level of my disease (pretty low I think).

i have my own bio-hazard container ...
Just look at what I brought home. This is a three months supply. Value $12500.00 –> good thing it was free. I have to keep it all in the fridge, the pharmaceutical company is supposed to bring a ‘fridge lock box’ tomorrow, mostly so Dennis the Menace Georgia won’t get into my stash. They would be deadly for little people.

I’ve never given myself any sort of needle, except for the time in ‘year one’ (about 7th grade) when I pierced my ears with a sewing needle during a math lesson at Dubai College (really attentive teacher). However, giving myself the first two shots turned out to be easy … really, really easy. I’m good … really, really good.

I am relieved giving the injections was so easy. Now I am hoping the side effects are minimum. I am taking 2 drugs, both currently used to treat MS, just not together. One or the other maybe a placebo, but I am guaranteed one drug that works. Both have a BIG looooong list of side effects –> some pretty nasty. So far, so good.

I’ll keep you posted.

Winner is: Jamie —> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com. And it was #2 — Scary!

I know this has been done before, but not with my lovely-mug. Anyway, whoever said it was all going to be original?

It’s either this:

Or … I’ll have to tell you all about my day of house cleaning. How after more than a month, I finally got down on my hands and knees and cleaned the baseboards, how I move the sofa’s to vacuum, and even wiped down the legs of the kitchen chairs. Boring eh? Just enjoy the photos.

Which haircut do you think that I actually sported at one time?

NaBloPoMo Starts Today (coffee contest begins)

Winner is: Michelle Boor —> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com.

National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) begins today. One post everyday for the month of November.

Remember, I tried something like this before? I think I managed about 120 days with Blog365; so this should be a piece of cake, right? I can hope.

It’s been a sugary, chocolately, lazy day.

lizzy punk / goth halloween
Lizzy was a punk rocker for Halloween. It turned out a bit ‘goth like’ when I added a bit too much white face paint to the foundation. The hair was my favorite part, helped largly in part to Got2be Glued Blasting Freeze Spray. This stuff seriously rocks!

Oops! I’m stumped. 911 I need help! (coffee contest continues)

Winner is: Anastasia –> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com.

I forgot to pick the ‘have a coffee on me’ winners for the last few posts.

I’ve done that now –> so make sure to go back and check if you are a WINNER.

stuffie without a body
I’m making a ‘softie’ (my kids call them stuffies) from my recycled (or is that upcycled?) wool sweaters. I’m sort of stumped. I can’t decide how to make the body (I’m just making it up as I go along) AND whether make it in the same wool/cashmere as the head and limbs or use a different color, so it looks sort of like clothing. I might have to go searching for more sweaters, all of the colors I have just don’t look quite right. I pretty much have to stick with felt as it doesn’t fray and I don’t have a machine. Any ideas –> links please.

making a stuffie
The BIG red nose … hmmm … might change that too.

I’ve also decided that I need a sewing machine. That will mean that I will also need lessons. Sewing everything by hand is a bit much. My stitches are not neat enough and it looks kind of tacky.

OMGAWD I’m a tacky crafter. Someone rescue me!

Be back when he/she is finished.

Felt Mitts (coffee contest continues)

Posted on 16 October 2008 by MommyKnows

**Winner is: Emily B – please email me Emily @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com to claim your prize.**

Monday the whole family (plus the dog), my aunt and uncle, cousin, wife and 2 mini cousins packed up and headed to a local pumpkin patch. The kids had a great time, BUT it was COLD. It feels like winter here.

Georgia
Already dry chapped winter skin is making an appearance. My hands hurt with cold all afternoon. It got me thinking about felt (remember I found felt last spring), and how even though I am the NON-crafty sort, the one who said, “craft schmafts“, I was desperate to turn old Salvation Army wool sweaters into mitts and slippers for the kids.

Did you know you can ‘felt’ old wool sweaters by washing in hot water and rinsing in cold? Make sure you add soap :)
Felted Sweaters
Here are a few of the sweaters that I felted. I think this batch went through 2 cycles in the machine. These started out as adult larges and are now about a kids size 4 (I know because they fit Georgia).

Felt from Felted Sweaters
Once felted, I cut the sweaters up into usable pieces. Mostly this means cutting out the seams.

Mitten templates
I decided to make Sam a pair first. Mostly because he was the only one who DIDN’T care about color, design etc. It was nice to be able to do whatever I wanted. He wasn’t bothered in the the least to get the dark gray lambs wool. I traced his hand, added a 5 mm – 1 cm seam allowance and then cut out two templates.

Pin template to felted wool and cut out
I pinned the paper templates to the fabric and then cut out the fabric. I did two layers at a time … mostly because I am lazy like that. Also note, that you can use the ribbing of the sweater waistband as the wrist area for the mittens if you cut them as above.

One finished mitten (inside out)
I then turned them inside out and sewed them together. I sewed these by hand, because I don’t own a sewing machine, and have no clue how. No worries though … hand stitching works just fine.

One finished mitten.
Woohoo –> one down and one to go.

Once the two mitts were sewn, I used other recycled felt pieces, buttons etc. to add a cute design. I think these turned out sufficiently boyish.

Recycled Wool Sweater Mittens

I am working on some Chihuahua mittens for Georgia (her newest obsession). Lizzy has now decided she wants ‘girl’ Skulls. Then I am going to get started on some felt booties.

Do you have any projects on the go?
